College

Should I go to college ?

It is a question that every student asks oneself at least once in his life. The general answers, you get when you ask this question to other people that you think are more adult or mature than you are the following:

  1. If you want to do a job that requires a degree such as doctor, lawyer, engineer…then GO TO COLLEGE !
  2. If you want to do a job that does not require a degree such as entrepreneur, web designer, work on youtube, … Then DO NOT GO TO COLLEGE ! Even though college might be useful in some cases…
  3. And, if you do not know what to do… GO TO COLLEGE !

While I think the first two pieces of advices are good, I do not agree with the last one. If you do not know what to do, go to college…NOOO !! Explore, discover, learn, travel, and find what you like. In your journey, maybe, you will find that after all, you still needed to go to college. However, you could find other formation, maybe a form of higher education that is not college… Possibilities are endless, and by going to college, you might go in only one direction. For the luckiest, going to college will bring you right where you needed to be. However, for some people, this might lead to serious lack of confidence, reassesment of oneself, or even depression. I am not being negative; but I have seen it happening to me and to other people, most of them who preferred to continue with college, and it is a choice I respect. Of course, almost always something come from the experience of going to college, even if it is realising that college is not for you. Nevertheless, if you do not know why you are going there in the first place why waste four years like that, when one year doing what you want could make you save the most precious resources of all: your time.

I’m not saying “don’t go to college”, I’m saying “go to college” if you want to, but do not go there only because you do not know what do. There are so many things to do outside of college: travelling; apprenticeship, volunteering, working,…We are in the 21st century so YOU decide what you want to do, and YOU create your own destiny.

And if your excuse is that your parents won’t pay you a gap year. First of all, you are an adult now and you are making our own decision. Secondly, if you are going to be making decision the only person you should count on for finance is you. Take a gap year and work or learn to live with 1 or 2 euros/$ per week, or do voluntary work, where you do not get paid but are still fed and housed. Possibilities are endless when you take the time to look. I only learned that after my first three years of college. I learned that my country had a service dedicated to volunteering, that Europe had one too, that people could get housed in exchange of working few hours and end up in Colombia or Costa Rica. I did not experiment those adventures, my journey, is different… Nonetheless, If you do not know what to do with your life, my only advice is to GO and EXPLORE !!

Truth is you can always go back to college, but you cannot be young twice.

So, I hope you will think of that before saying “I’m going to college, because I do not know what to do.” I made this mistake and this lead me to drop out so…not the best outcome…or maybe, it was 😉
